Care & Maintenance of your flat glass film installation

Flat glass window film is not expected to have the same visual quality as glass alone.

Of course, some of you will have installed the product to improve privacy, prevent prying eyes from looking in at people, equipment, screens or furnishings. Whilst other will be reducing solar gain and glare to make the space more comfortable for users.

Your window film is applied with a water based “slip” solution; you should allow enough time for the solution to fully dry out.

A day after installation, there will still be water present under the film that may cause visual distortion. Depending on humidity and temperature, approximately 30 days after application the water should have dried, potentially longer for humid and cooler environments.

Thicker films and films with a metallic layer (such as “Mirror Silver” ) can require substantially longer to completely dry. In addition, some water bubbles can take more than 30 days as well.

Film installation is ideally performed after all other construction trades have completed work. Our installers will make every attempt to provide a clean and dust-free work area when the films are installed, paying attention to ventilation systems which may deposit contamination from other work areas.

Examples (and sources) of visible defects are:

Note:  A small level of contamination near the edges of the film is difficult to avoid and can be expected, especially on older timber and painted frames.  Some particles are acceptable where poor frame condition makes contamination unpreventable.

Similarly, applications of exterior window films have numerous sources of uncontrolled debris and may require acceptance of some defects.

Window Glass does expand and contract slightly in heat variation. As a result, the installation team will leave any recommended gap between the film and the frame. This will should be typically 1-2mm. For thicker safety films, gaps may be as wide as 3mm
